Cooper Bay
February 22
This morning the M.S. ENDEAVOUR stopped at the eastern-most extremity of the South Georgia mainland and anchored at Cooper Bay: This protected bay gave us a chance to go ashore and walk around a bit - excellent hiking along a meltwater stream, on rocky slopes, tussock, and maybe snow fields. This visit will required a bit of a steep climb through tussock (and fur seals), but rewards were great. Tom led an excellent hike where we explored the terrain and stretched our legs a bit. The weather was overcast and lightly raining, but other wise very nice.
After we finished our ramble, we took a zodiac cruise around the offshore rocks and kelp beds and along the shoreline to see the rambunctious little gold-crested Macaroni penguins up close and personal. They are named for the English 'fops' (also known as "Macaronis") of the 18th century who copied the garish clothing of Italy and wore outrageous feathers in their hats... remember how Yankee Doodle "stuck a feather in his hat and called it Macaroni?" The last 10 pictures were taking from a zodiac in a pretty good swell. I love that image-stabilized lens.
