Gold Harbor

February 22

After lunch we landed at another wonderful site along the northern coast (in the eastern section) of South Georgia, where we went ashore at one of the best place on the island... Gold Harbor. We saw lots more king penguins, but there also an impressive assortment of gentoo penguins, skuas, gulls, light-mantled sooty albatrosses, pintail ducks, sheathbills, shags, elephants seals, fur seals, etc. The lowlands afforded easy walking and exploring. We hiked through the waist-high tussock grasses to get to the edge of the penguin colony and had a very nice view.  This is truly a beautiful spot and we had a good landing in spite of the continuing wet conditions - the wind had finally died down. I was most impressed by the noise at this site. Between the 100,000 king penguins and the barking fur seals and the bellowing and belching elephant seals it was quite a raucous stop.

A note on picture captions: you may notice as you go through the pictures, that not everything is captioned. Quite honestly I'm running out of things to say, so just enjoy the pictures and I'll try to caption things that are different or funny or important. There are a lot of pictures.
