Once again we enjoyed a successful long distance trip across the west. We left from Dallas and spent two days driving to Breckenridge, Colorado. Once ensconced in our condo, we proceeded to hike, bike and run our way around Summit County. The weather was perfect, and we managed to hit several of our favorite restaurants and hangouts. There was also a jazz fest going on so we enjoyed some great live music, too.
After having almost two weeks in Breck, Celeste drove to Ashland, Oregon via the Great Basin of eastern Oregon. This was a chance to see a little bit of new country, and eat up a little bit of time so that Doug could fly home from Colorado, get some work done and fly back out to meet Celeste, Ken and Betty Lou in Oregon. The trip was uneventful, and the scenery was striking in its near desolation. This would be rough country to try and make a living.
After arriving in Ashland Celeste started picking people up at the airport, arranging rafting trips, and sussing out the race course for the S.O.B. 50K that she and Ken would be running. The four of us managed a half-day raft trip on the upper Rogue River (and want to do more in spite of the river eels). We also visited Oregon Caves National Monument, Crater Lake National Park, 6 different espresso stands, and several vineyards/wineries.
We had an awesome time yet again with Ken and Betty Lou! The activities were great, the side trips were cool, and the 50k was an incredible experience. After leaving the three of them at the airport, Celeste started her trip back across the country - 4 days from Ashland to Dallas. (Through the deserts of California and Arizona. Through the lava fields of central New Mexico. Through west Texas. All I can say is thank goodness for XM Satelite Radio!)
