Edinburgh Castle

From the park. The castle was started in the 12th century and has been in continuous use since then as a fortress, a royal palace, and a state prison.

(the tall structure to the upper right is the Scott Memorial)

Three views from the castle looking toward the city.

The castle is still used as a military barracks. Here a couple of soldiers prepare the chapel for a Korean War veterans memorial service.

The ubiquitous red phone booths. In both of these pictures you can really see how the castle was built right on the basaltic cone of an ancient volcano.

Mons meg. This is a siege gun built in Belgium in 1449 for the Duke of Normandy. After exploding during a salute to the Duke of York in 1682 it was retired.

One of the guards of the castle and the great Scottish lion.
