Loch Ness/Loch Lomond

Loch Ness fills the northern half of the Great Glen fault that divides the Highlands from Ft. Williams to Inverness. It is 24 miles long, 1 mile wide (at the widest point) and up to 1000 feet deep. It is home to the legendary monster "Nessie", who was first sighted by St.  Columba in the 6th century. Though serious examinations are often undermined by hoaxes and pranks, sonar techniques yield enigmatic results. Pleiosaurs, giant eels and too much whiskey are the usual suspects.
