We spent the morning touring the Castle with a wonderful guide who filled us in on the the differences between movie castles and real castles.
The castle was built by Edward I ("Longshanks") as a symbol of his power over the conquered Welsh. It was a classic example of deficit defense spending. Edward spent millions of pounds to build the castle which was never completed and which failed in its' stated task. The castle was breached and failed to protect those who depended on it. The construction of Caernarfon Castle nearly, if not completely bankrupted Edward I.
The castle was used as the investiture site for Prince Charles in 1969. He was shown waving from the castle, incomplete construction and all.
